Teaching Kids About the “I” in Faith

Teaching Kids About the "I" in Faith - Parenting Like HannahYou don’t have to look very hard to find an article speculating on why young people or Millennials or Christians in general are leaving the Church. The causes range from the name of the church to the type of music to almost anything and everything people can imagine. As I read the articles, I started noticing something.

The root of every theory started with “I” messages from those leaving. “I don’t get anything from that.” “I can’t worship a God who would expect that of me or others.” “I don’t like that.” “I don’t feel close to God when that happens.” “I don’t like the way they do that.” And on and on.

Kids, Egypt and God

Kids, Egypt and God - Parenting Like HannahKids love learning about Egypt, and who can blame them? Between mummies and hieroglyphics, it’s a world of interesting new things to discover. Imagine how excited your kids would be if they connected the Egypt of the Bible with the Egypt at school.

Strange as it may sound, kids love learning something at Church before they learn it in school. I have seen this happen year after year. There is just something special about having learned something outside of school before you are taught about it in school.

Too many times we glide right through those stories about Joseph and Moses without taking a look at the society in which those stories occurred. We miss out on opportunities to make the Bible stories more memorable and help our kids make the connection that the Bible is a book of history and not fiction.

There are several main areas you can cover when connecting Egyptian society to the appropriate Bible stories. Depending upon the age of your children, you can introduce them to more complex ideas and activities as they get older.

Christian Kids and Earth Day

Christian Kids and Earth Day - Parenting Like HannahWith the constant barrage from media and social actions groups, caring for God’s creation has increasingly mixed secularism, politics and earth worship with what should be a thankfulness for God’s creation. Your children are probably participating in Earth Day activities this week at school or in scouts or some other activity. While most of the activities are innocent, sometimes the teachings that go with them point your children away from God.

Instead of rejecting Earth Day as a pagan holiday, why not use it as an opportunity to teach your children about praising God and good stewardship? Remind them of the story of creation. Tell them the stories when God used rivers, storms, animals and other parts of His creation to accomplish His will. Talk about how God wants us to be good stewards of all of His gifts to us – including the earth. Find ways for your family to regularly, care for God’s creation.

Free Christian Parenting Resources

Free Christian Parenting Resources - Parenting Like HannahYou may not be aware that Parenting Like Hannah is actually a branch of a larger ministry, Teach One Reach One. Recently highlighted by the Points of Light Foundation in its Daily Points of Light Award, Teach One Reach One has resources parents can use, too.

Under the parenting tab on the Teach One Reach One website, you will find links to a free baptism study (with leader’s guide), how to adapt Teach One Reach One activities for families and a link back to Parenting Like Hannah. You can also take a look at the parenting workshops you can bring to your church or community. There is even a link to something we are very excited about developing.

In the near future, we hope to have parenting booklets on a variety of topics – all written at a lower elementary reading level. We want every parent to have access to basic Christian parenting principles written in an easy to understand format. Eventually, we hope to have all of these resources translated into multiple languages.

Christian Kids and the Jewish Holidays

Christian Kids and the Jewish Holidays - Parenting Like HannahChildren love holidays. There is something about the preparations, the excitement, the food and very often the presence of extended family and friends that make holidays special. Yet in many churches and Christian homes, children never learn much about the holidays in the Old Testament. These holidays can hold so much history and meaning in them for Christian children today. Introducing them to your kids can add another rich layer to their faith development.

At first glance, teaching your children about the holidays in the Old Testament can appear intimidating. If you have not been exposed to Judaism, many of the terms and concepts may not be familiar to you. A quick search will reveal the way they are celebrated today, but often that has changed quite a bit from the original celebration and even intent of the holiday. In spite of these obstacles, you can begin introducing your children to these special celebrations without a lot of stress.
