Raising Kids to Be Who God Meant Them To Be

Raising Kids To Be Who God Created Them To Be - Parenting Like HannahOne of my favorite things about New York City is the niche stores you can find everywhere. Want anything, and there is probably a store somewhere in the city that sells every variation of that item ever created. Last week, I found this great store in Chelsea Market that had bins of all types of different spices and teas.

The store took great pains to carefully label each bin with the name of the spice or tea it contained. Some spices look very similar to each other. If you have ever mistakenly substituted cumin for cinnamon in a recipe though, you understand how important it is to know exactly which spice you are buying.

Kids, Bees and God

Kids, Bees and God - Parenting Like HannahIt is only natural that God’s creation points us towards Him. Your children will often see and understand God a little better by seeing His handiwork in nature. Spending time outdoors in activities like hiking and gardening will give your children time to interact with God’s creation. It will also give you opportunities to talk to them about concepts like stewardship (taking care of the world God gave us), gifts (using the things God has created to serve Him), creation itself and much, much more.

I’m always on the lookout for resources that will help parents do creative things with their children while also helping them teach their kids about God. Sometimes, these resources are secular, but the ideas will give you something to do and you can insert your own Bible lessons and principles that apply to what you are doing.

Fun Ways To Teach Kids To Notice God’s Little Opportunities

Fun Ways To Teach Kids To Notice God's Little Opportunities - Parenting Like HannahIn God, Kids and the Little Things, I shared how God will give your kids lots of opportunities to serve others almost every day. Often your kids (like the rest of us) will not even notice these things. They will go through their day oblivious to the chances God is giving them to serve Him, often by serving others and sharing their faith. They will miss out on some amazing God adventures because they didn’t even see His invitation to join Him. They will miss opportunities to grow their faith by watching how God works in their world.

If you want to help your kids not miss the opportunities God gives them, you will have to get them out of the natural human tendency to be a bit self-absorbed. We all have a tendency to get so wrapped up in what we are doing that we can cause mayhem in our wake and not even realize it. Forget about noticing those somewhat subtle invitations to join God in touching the lives around us. Sometimes we even miss the huge blinking neon billboards from people God wants us to serve.

God, Kids and the Little Things

God, Kids and the Little Things - Parenting Like HannahIt happened to me again this weekend. In fact, it has happened many times over the years in churches all over the country. As I struggle to take load after huge load of awkward bundles into a church building, I walk past the same people over and over and over.

Maybe one in a thousand offers to help immediately. One out of a hundred offers to help after I pass by three or four times. Most will help if specifically asked, but even then many will help with obvious reluctance. The irony is I would imagine most of those same people just gave a good deal of money to God. They probably nodded in agreement during the lessons. They may have even volunteered to do some odious task for the Church.

Yet when God gave them a tiny opportunity to serve someone, they didn’t even see it. They didn’t mean to be rude or inconsiderate, they were just totally oblivious. It probably doesn’t even sound like a big deal to you. In fact, you are probably wondering what this even has to do with parenting your kids.

Teaching Kids About Godly Dreams

Teaching Kids About Godly Dreams - Parenting Like HannahWhat were your childhood dreams? Did you want to be an astronaut? What changed your mind? How do you know if changing your mind was what God wanted for your life or if He had another plan you missed somehow?

These are extremely important questions, not only for your life, but also for the lives of your children. The God who cares enough to know the number of hairs on their head, who sent His Son to die on the cross for their sins, and who tells us multiple times in scripture He will guide their steps (Proverbs 3:5-6, Isaiah 30:21, James 1:5-6 and many, many more) – must surely care about where they go to school, whom they date and marry, their career choices and their ministry choices. Our children have free will, but how much more rich and fulfilling their lives will be if they can align their decisions with what God knows is best for them?!

So what do your kids need to know about having godly dreams? There are a lot of things they will learn as they go through the process, but here are some I have learned over the years:
