Teaching Christian Kids to Ask for Help

Teaching Christian Kids to Ask for Help - Parenting Like HannahIn the last post, we talked about the importance of teaching your children to obey Jeremiah 6:16. There is one last little part to that verse we didn’t discuss though.

“But you said, ‘We will not walk in it.’” (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV) Those Israelites were stubborn people! Unfortunately, so are we and our children. Choosing not to heed this verse caused the Jewish people a host of extremely negative consequences.

Had they only asked for God’s advice on how to live their lives or heeded the advice He had already given them, things would have been so different. In fact throughout the history of Israel, there were several times the people got into a world of trouble because they forgot to ask God’s advice before making some important choices.

Teaching Christian Kids to Take the Easy Path

Teaching Christian Kids to Take the Easy Path- Parenting Like HannahBet you are wondering what in the world I am thinking. Everyone knows the Christian life is really hard. And in some ways, I guess it is. You may not get to be quite as popular, because you opt not to do everything everyone else is doing. You may struggle not to sin. You may even be persecuted in mild or even painfully, fatal ways.

There is another side to the Christian life people rarely discuss. It’s really a shame, because it is one of the biggest earthly benefits of living a Christian lifestyle. Our adult Bible class teacher reminded of this verse on Sunday.

“This is what the Lord says:“Stand at the crossroads and look;ask for the ancient paths, ask where the good way is, and walk in it,and you will find rest for your souls.” (Jeremiah 6:16 NIV)

Christian Kids and “The Talk”

CHristian Kids and the Talk - Parenting Like HannahWhenever I ask parents about parenting concerns they wish Parenting Like Hannah would address, one of the most frequent answers is the topic of sex education. Whether it’s what to tell their children, how to help them avoid temptation or how to help them make wise choices and understand the consequences of ungodly ones, sex is a scary topic for most parents. Especially Christian parents.

You see as Christian parents, we have to tell our kids God doesn’t want them doing all of those things their friends are doing. We have to help them understand the ultimate, fulfilling sex act – sex within the boundaries of marriage.

Most parents chicken out entirely. Of, they may be able to choke out the scientific basics and even throw a few Bible verses at their kids. Often though, “the talk” comes too late and doesn’t contain all of the information our kids need to make wise choices.

Encouraging Young People to Accept Opportunities to Grow

Encouraging Young People to Take Advantage of Opportunities to Grow - Parenting Like HannahOne of the advantages to getting older is you begin to notice patterns in human behavior. Watching others carefully over time can help you decide what strategies tend to work and which ones don’t. One of my favorite ones to teach young people is the tendency of many people to avoid what I like to call God opportunities.

You may have seen this yourself and not realized it. Ever heard someone bemoan there aren’t any opportunities for their child to serve at church? Yet your church bulletin is filled with ads asking for volunteers. Or maybe you have heard a parent complain their children haven’t made any friends at church, but their kids only go to class or activities once a month or less.

God often provides us with a lot of opportunities we choose to ignore or reject. Oh, we have all sorts of good reasons, but the end result is we miss many opportunities God gives us to experience the Christian life fully.

Free Christian Parenting Resources

Free Christian Parenting Resources - Parenting Like HannahYou may not be aware that Parenting Like Hannah is actually a branch of a larger ministry, Teach One Reach One. Recently highlighted by the Points of Light Foundation in its Daily Points of Light Award, Teach One Reach One has resources parents can use, too.

Under the parenting tab on the Teach One Reach One website, you will find links to a free baptism study (with leader’s guide), how to adapt Teach One Reach One activities for families and a link back to Parenting Like Hannah. You can also take a look at the parenting workshops you can bring to your church or community. There is even a link to something we are very excited about developing.

In the near future, we hope to have parenting booklets on a variety of topics – all written at a lower elementary reading level. We want every parent to have access to basic Christian parenting principles written in an easy to understand format. Eventually, we hope to have all of these resources translated into multiple languages.
